Floram Project

In the end of 1988, IEA formed a group for the elaboration of a Brazilian proposal for the sequestration of the excess of carbon in the atmosphere and a consequent mitigation of the greenhouse effect.

Composed of scientists from different areas and representatives of the enterprise sector, the group worked in the theme throughout the year of 1989. The result was Floram Project, which figured on the planting of 20 million hectares (2.3% of Brazilian territory) of forests in 20 years.

Along with this main goal, the authors defined directives of sustainability related to environmental, economic and social aspects.

The texts that formalized the proposal and other essays related to it were made public the following year, in issue 9 of "Estudos Avançados" journal (May-Aug., 1990).

In 1995, the articles were translated into English and published in a special issue of the journal. The readers may access the full texts through the links listed here.
